“Whatever they grow up to be, they are still our children, and the one most important of all the things we can give to them is unconditional love. Not a love that depends on anything at all except that they are our children.”

~ Rosaleen Dickson
Langley Centre
The Learning Circle in Langley has created a one of a kind 1900 sq ft outdoor play space.  It is constructed from natural materials and will allow the children to use both fine and gross motor skills.  It has multiple different natural aspects that make it unique, such as a grassy hill that the children can climb up, with a rock wall and slide built into it, a log tunnel and a wooden playhouse.  There are so many aspects to our outdoor play centre that it is impossible to describe and you will have to come see it for yourself.

We feel that with the use of natural materials it will instill life skills into all the children at The learning circle in multiple ways. There will be a garden for the children to plant and grow their own flowers or vegetables.  Children will also learn cooperation and sharing, as they develop and use problem solving skills and as they create and maintain relationships.

When I think about why I decided to start working with children my mind goes back to a car accident that I was in during my teenaged years. It resulted in my right arm having to be amputated which was a very challenging experience for me to overcome. What helped me through the few years to follow was all the curious looks and questions that I got from children.  It was then that I realized how smart, curious and accepting children really are.  Children are open minded and accept people for who they are and what they can do.  When they look at me they didn’t see a disability just something new and different.  There were many different situations that I encountered, some families allowed their children to approach me and ask questions while others shied away afraid to offend me.  So I thought to myself ‘how can I make a difference in these children’s lives and encourage them to ask questions and explore different situations so that they will be comfortable to just be themselves’.  I wanted to create an environment that enables them to be as open-minded and curious, as they wanted to be. I wanted to show them that you can overcome adversity and persevere to become anything you want to be and to do anything you want to do.  I had hoped to be given the opportunity to make a positive difference in children’s lives.  Now as I sit in my centre and look at what I have created, I think to myself “this is the opportunity that I have been waiting for”.  The best part about this is being able to take my 2 year old daughter to work with me, to a centre that I am proud of and proud to have her be a part of.

I remember one child that looked at me and said “you can’t do anything, you only have one hand”, to that child I replied “I can do anything that I want to do, I just have to figure out a new way to do it”.  It was my challenge to myself to do all the activities that I use to do and to show the children that anything was possible.  When circle time came and we all sat around I will never forget the silence that filled the room, the wide eyes and excited faces as I told the children the stories of my adventures and how I figured out ways to do it all.  I showed them the pictures of my adventures of me rock climbing, white water kayaking and I even showed them my little accomplishments as tying my shoes with one hand or playing the guitar.  I proved to them that anything was possible, as long as you get creative and think outside the box.

I am excited to tell you all about the opening of our new centre in Langley and how within only a few months we managed to put it all together.  With the help of great staff and great teachers and the ideas and guidance of many children, including my daughter Ella; we offer to you this one of a kind program. We teach, encourage and inspire children to learn and explore and figure out who they are. And in return I feel that they do the same for us.

I look forward to educating and impacting your child and preparing them for a successful future.

Our Founder and President
As I sit here in my office and think about what I would like you to know about myself and my centre; I see this silver picture frame with a drawing of Hayley & me.

At age 3, Hayley drew this picture of us in 1992 and spelled my name with three 'a's, and all I can do is smile from ear to ear, as my eyes fill with joy.

Today, she is 22 years old and has grown up to be taller than me, absolutely beautiful and incredibly smart. Still to this day, I tease her parents about what an amazing job I have done with her! When in reality, it takes a whole community to raise one child and I hope that I have influenced her as much as she has me.

Most people you ask, don't love their job – I, however, can truly say that I love being with children!  My job enables me to meet new people, get to know my families, share my life with the parents & theirs with me, see single parents struggle chasing their dreams & achieve them, build long term relationships, interact with different age groups, and be able to develop close relationships. Families and parents grant a great and incredible responsibility to me, in taking care & guiding children to be positive, creative, strong individuals. How many people can walk into their job and have a little person so excited to see you and gives you a big hug or see children experience things for the first time? Children never cease to amaze me. I am truly blessed to have the greatest job in the world - - one that is extremely self-rewarding and allows me to be close with my staff.

Our History
My passion has always been creating an environment where children can be nurtured, grow with respect and be educated at their own developmental level.  With over 20 years in the child care industry I feel it is time to share the knowledge, my compassion and experience with others.  It’s time to move forward with the growth of the company and help others achieve their goal.  The Learning Circle is one of a kind facility with the most unique programs and curriculum.

As I look back at how it all started in 1992, I truly believe things happen for a reason.  I started out with Once Upon a Time Family Day Care in a basement of a Coquitlam home when opportunity knocked on my door with the City of Coquitlam.  I was chosen out of many applicants to provide a child care facility in the Coquitlam Town Center Park Stadium.  The Rec Room Kids Club was born in 1998 and expanded into Nestor Elementary school in 2000.  When the City of Coquitlam determined that changes were necessary for the Town Center Park Stadium to provide more green space and athletic facilities to our growing community, change was literally at my door step.  Although, we had spent 9 great years at the Town Center, it was time to find a new home.  April 2007, my dream facility was created in Lincoln Center.

From the high tech security system to the beautiful 3,200 square foot outdoor roof top play space this facility is definitely one of a kind.  The Rec Room Kids Club name no longer suited our excellent quality care and educational based programs and therefore the name change was needed.  The Learning Circle is a true reflection of our ever growing company, ideas, opportunities and vision.  TLC is truly quality care, educational based and community driven!

Our Dedication
Do you know the saying, "you don't know what you have, until it is gone". In the short time frame of five months, I tragically lost both of my parents.  At the age of 23, I realized very quickly how much of an influence my parents really were in my life and how much they gave me, taught me & encouraged me.

If I can give you something today by reading my message, it would be either: appreciate people in your life or realize what an influence you have on your children. I never realized this until it was too late. This is why I dedicate my centre to my parents and all families that attend.

My goal is to build strong and well mannered children that have good morals and values about themselves, as my parents gave me.  Although I keep my mom & dad close in my heart, I have to admit I have the biggest family anyone could ever ask for. The Rec Room Kids Club Child Care Learning Centre is truly my extended family and for this, I am grateful.

If you are looking for a place where you can feel both comfortable and happy knowing your children and well taken care of, learning and having fun, I would welcome the chance to meet you and your family.

“The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him.”
